My name is José Been, born in 1979 in the beautiful town of Dalen in the province of Drenthe, the Netherlands but now living with husband and dog in Vleuten. I grew up in the northeastern part of the country before moving to Amsterdam to go to university to read history, Spanish and French. After jobs in management support and marketing and communication, I acknowledged what I had known for quite a while. I should be ‘doing something with languages and communication’.
Sport is important in my life. From the age of seven I was a swimmer with a bronze medal at the provincial championships as career highlight. Passive sports were consumed on the television and by visiting bike races where my father was the sports director. I would never be a top athlete myself but sports never disappeared from my life.
As these things go one event led to a whole new direction in my life. On 18 December 2008 I was diagnosed with (breast) cancer. I am completely cured now but this experience was the start of my own company. SportLingua was the name of the company where I could combine my passion for sports and my talent for languages and communication.
From 1 January 2014 the company name has been changed to Tour de José Media. It’s my name on Twitter and the name people in the cycling world know. I added ‘Media’ because the company has evolved into more than just languages and communication. It’s a business where television, media production and journalism find their place.
